Abalozi

Drumming Africa is involved in a band called Abalozi and we can organise perfomances by Abalozi.

[‘’abalozi’ n.  Nguni term for ‘spiritual beings who manifest in whistling’; ventriloquist[s].

ABALOZI comprise a trio of Bantu Nguni-Mbo musicians. They are:

Sazi Dlamini – ethnomusicologist and Southern African music specialist with an M-degree from UKZN, indigineous musical-instrument maker, children’s musical performance producer, composer & inventor of sound-sources born in Dududu, KwaZulu-Natal south coast.

Madala Kunene – Mkhumbane (Cato Manor)-born international world-music guitarist, jaw-harpist, singer, composer & recording artist.

Mthokozisi ‘Chissano’ Hlela – Born in Mpumuza, [PMB] is a Zulu drummer and formerly percussionist for “African Footprints”. He trades in indigenous African musical instruments, performs music and is aspirant film-maker.

ABALOZI are torch-bearers and mediators of neotraditional musical performance culture, who specialize in the sharing of indigenous musical performance knowledge and making sounds from acoustic sources which include:

  • Voices & Bodies
  • Musical bows of the south- east Africa including:
    • Umakhweyane
    • Ugubhu
    • Uhadi
    • Umrhubhe
    • Udloko/Isicelekeshe/Isikhelekehle
  • Lamellaphones  including sanza, kalimba &, Shona mbira, and Chopi timbila xylophone)
  • Umtshingo and gemfe reed-flutes
  • Imbumbu horns
  • Home-made string instruments – guitars, harps, fiddles, mouthbows
  • Assorted hand percussion – drums, rattles, shakers
  • Isigingci acoustic guitars
