Indigenous music workshops

Sazi Dlamini - ethnomusicologist, jazz musician, guitarist, composer and specialist in children’s musical performance production – conducts African music workshops and demonstrations for schools. He teaches indigenous musical instruments [including original ‘home-made’ instruments], musical instrument-making and diverse repertoires of Southern African indigenous and neotraditional music genres.

African Music and Musical Instruments Demonstration/Workshop

A general demonstration of indigenous musical instruments, including history, technique and repertoire for all grades of school learners is offered.

Types of musical instruments Include

  • Musical bows of the south-east Africa:
    • Umakhweyane
    • Ugubhu
    • Uhadi
    • Umrhubhe
    • Udloko/Isicelekeshe/Isikhelekehle
  • Lamellaphones [thumb-pianos] (kalimba, mbira, sanza)
  • Zulu mtshingo and gemfe reed flutes
  • Home-made string instruments – guitars, harps, fiddles, mouthbows
  • Assorted hand percussion – drums, rattles, shakers

Music styles Include

  • African children’s vocal and instrumental music
  • Zulu maskandi style [using home-made tin-guitars]
  • Zulu indlamu and sangoma diviners’ drum rhythms]
  • Indigenous Call & Response singing
  • Indigenous instrumental ensemble
  • Animal [Qudu] horn ensemble
  • Reed pan-pipe ensemble

Workshops/demonstrations take 45 minutes, during which learners are introduced to examples from indigenous classes of musical instruments, their construction, playing technique and select songs. The total cost for learners’ demonstration/workshop is R950.00
